Hello guys, greetings from just south of London in overcast England!

I've got a surprise for my wife at the end of Sept, we're staying in Times Square and I've booked NY Skyride, and Mama Mia etc etc and a World Yacht Dinner leaving from Pier 81. Gonna tell her all about two days before we leave! It's our 25th wedding anniversary.

I was planning to walk from the hotel to Pier 81 down Broadway and along 42nd street. More to the point, I was planning on strolling back after our romantic dinner / cruise the same route.

Q. Havin read a lot of posts on here asking about safety, would anyone think this was a bit of a risk? Or is there a walking route that is likely to be safer. (I realise there's always risk, but it makes sense to avoid obvious no-go areas).

Great site by the way. Thanks. Andy.

The area is safe, and teeming with people at all hours. Your are better off on the main east-west roads (i.e., 42nd street) -- the streets are more desolate at night on the far west side between the mid forties and mid fifties where most of the Manhattan car dealers, and some public housing, are located.

Thanks both. I even checked out Google Street View to see if that gave me a feel for it, but your advice is somewhat more reliable!

Do you think it's about a 30 minute walk?
