35 - 45 minutes I would say.. it depends on a lot of things.. if the train is going local or express, and sometimes there's construction on the 7 line, but that's a good estimate.

Why not go down to Penn and take the LIRR? It's much faster and more comfortable (MTA LIRR - Service to US Tennis Open Starts August 25).

thanks; I can't find the cost of a ticket. I'm lost on that site

edit--I think I found it.
So ok, I would take the subway from hotel or a cab to Penn Station. Purchase ticket at Penn. Can I purchase round trip?
then once back(no telling what time) I would have to take subway or taxi back to hotel.

I think I have it down now.

$4.50 if you buy the ticket at the station during off-peak hours... not really worth it, imo, subway is cheaper, and gets you there just the same.

The subway makes a lot more stops, thus it takes longer. I think the LIRR is more reliable. Subways are delayed all the time for silly reasons. Here is an alert from last year: (Commuting Alert! Delays on 7 Train - Straight Sets Blog - NYTimes.com). Also, the 7 Train is one of the most crowded in the city. Personally, I would walk from your hotel to Penn. It's not that far. It's only one subway stop from Times Square if you don't want to walk. Also, if you're traveling on the weekend, you want to make sure that the 7 is not rerouted (or suspended) due to construction. It's a common occurrence, especially during the summer.

The cost is negligible. What's two dollars if you're on vacation in New York?
