Hello Everyone,
I am moving from Phoenix, AZ to NYC because I just accepted a job in Lower Manhattan and found a roommate on roommates.com. She seems really nice. I have spoken with her for a few weeks now so I do not feel like she would screw me over. I mailed her the deposit and everything. The area I found out is around Midwood in South Brooklyn. I am looking for recommendations for bars/resutrants/clubs anything like that in that area and I did hear it is a Jewish neighborhood. I am okay with that even tho I am not Jewish.
Thank you.

The Midwood neighborhood is not South Brooklyn.
South Brooklyn is to the west and north of Midwood, and includes the Red Hook and the Gowanus neighborhoods.
South Brooklyn is way north of southern Brooklyn, and got its name when it was the southern part of the original Town of Brooklyn (it was south of the Village of Brooklyn in the Town of Brooklyn), which later became the original City of Brooklyn.
Midwood is basically south of central Brooklyn.

The area around Avenue J in Midwood is mostly Torah-observant Jews, and many businesses are closed for Shabbat (from before 18 minutes before sunset on Friday evening to after 42 minutes after sunset on Saturday night).

Putting aside the confusing nomenclature differences between "South Brooklyn" and "Southern Brooklyn" for a moment....
Midwood is a nice safe neighborhood, but not a place for nightlife and excitement. Its very residential, even semi-suburban with a large number of single family homes with lawns and driveways. Many of them are quite large and beautiful. And yes, there are a lot of conservative Jewish residents. In the last few years, there has also been an influx of Russians and Ukrainians. It is not at all unusual to hear Russian being spoken and there are a few Russian businesses on Kings Highway.

Besides being a Jewish neighborood Midwood is also a neighborhood that most of the residents are married with large families. So there is not a singles scene there. Due to that it is not really a place where you find bars or nightclubs. There are a few good restaurants though.

Nothing confusing about the nomenclature, Midwood is NOT in "south Brooklyn"! Wonder where the OP got that?
South Brooklyn is downtown; pretty much everything west of Park Slope and north of Brooklyn Heights is South Brooklyn, including, and in addition to, those neighborhoods already mentioned, Cobble Hill, Carol Gardens and Boerum Hill. Before the original gentrification, those names were not in common use, except Red Hook, which was distinct. It was all simply "south Brooklyn" and was a working class neighborhood, a good portion of which were dock workers. See the movie, "On the Waterfront", to get an idea. The bar from the movie still exists on Atlantic Avenue (though the movie was filmed in Hoboken, NJ).
Midwood does not have the sort of young neo-yuppie nightlife you're looking for. It's a middle class family area for the most part; and, depending upon what part, it is heavily Sperdic (I think) Jewish---which means very religious. A lot of local businesses may be closed early Friday thru Saturday. So, there's no party atmosphere.
To party, you'll have to travel to other neighborhoods or to the city. Not a big deal, the subway is cheap. Taxi fare from the city can be expensive though.

South Brooklyn is variable - depending on the area it can be nice or a LOT less so.
And it's 'sephardic' which only means Jews whose origins are NOT from Eastern Europe - usually they're from Northern Africa. It has nothing to do with how religious they are.

Sephardic comes from the word Sephard, which is Hebrew for Spain, and are those Jews who trace their heritage to the Iberian peninsula and whose everyday language was Ladino, Castillian Spanish written using the Hebrew alphabet.
Jews from from Northern Africa and the Middle East are know as Mizrachim.
Most Jews in the Midwood area are Ashkenazi, not Sephardic. Ashkenazi Jews trace their heritage to central and eastern Euope and whose everyday language was Yiddish, High German written using the Hebrew alphabet.
See Judaism 101: Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews for more information about these different Jewish cultural groups.

When you're finished slogging through all the arguments about exactly where Midwood is (and what makes a Sephardic Jew)...let me just second Upstater's commentary. I live in Midwood--for the most part, you could be pardoned for thinking that you'd made a wrong turn and wound up in the suburbs of Long Island someplace. This neighborhood definitely does not put you in mind of New York City as most people picture it. Needless to say, I love it here!

Midwood is a relatively safe, quiet, and attractive neighborhood with many trees. It's served by the Q & F trains which will both get you into Manhattan fairly quickly if you need to go there. But no, it doesn't have a young restaurant/bar scene but depending where you are in Midwood, you could take the Q a few stops to Ditmas Park or the F a few stops to Park Slope for some neighborhood nightlife.
