The dates in the earliest history of NYC are indeed confusing.

I will add a few that some people may not have heard of.

William Kidd, the famous pirate, lived in a old Dutch style house near Pearl and Wall Streets.

Jennie Jerome Churchill, a native New Yorker, was the mother of famous British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. Jerome Park Reservoir in The Bronx is named after her family.

Norman Rockwell, the famous painter of small town life, grew up in New York City!

I have to find some of my old stuff in my storage. I know I have some good NYC facts and history in there that I'll share with everyone.
Thanks for the correction. I can't give you another rep point right now.

The Joralemons, a Dutch family from way, way back in Brooklyn history. The matriarch of the family delighted her neighbors with olykoek (literally, "oily cake") a fried confection that later came to be known as the doughnut. There's a street in Brooklyn Heights named for that family, and let's face it: if you're going to name a street for someone, naming a street for the person who devised the doughnut is probably one of the better reasons!
