Bayside is probably more diverse than Rockland, it's been voted as best place to raise kids.
Never want to bump into "ghetto" attitude, I don't want to be anywhere remotely close to it. I'm hoping for areas that have nice neighboring towns not just a great place with horrid surrounding areas.
I like the diversity of Bayside but I love the friendliness of folks in Rockland County. In all fairness I haven't been to Bayside but my neighbor raves it's the greatest town and has great activities for kids, malls and is SAFE. My children are interacial, just thinking of where we'll be more welcome.
oh boy, I just saw Spring Valley schools that are near New City, is there any escape?

I currently live in Queens but I've been to Pearl River to do house hunting. There are no ghetto neighborhoods within or adjacent to either PR or Bayside, if that is your main concern.
Despite some diversity, PR remains strongly Irish-Italian Catholic. However, it does not mean that people in PR will be rude to you just because you're not like them. Bayside is more racially diverse, although it has a strong (and probably growing) Asian presence.
It is also much more expensive to buy a home in Bayside. However, Bayside also has more rental units available in the market. Bayside also has better proximity to Manhattan and the instututions of learning, the arts and sciences. However, PR has a decent school disctrict (and parochial school) and low taxes versus other suburbs.
So it really depends on what you're looking for. IMO, if I were renting, I would be OK with either, with a bias towards Bayside for its proximity. But if I were buying a home, I would probably choose PR, where the overall character of the nighborhood is not likely to change over the decades.
I live in Rockland (in Pomona), and work in Manhattan. Rockland as a whole is very family-oriented. Not much of a single person's ideal location. As far as schools, Pearl River has very good ones. Stay away from Spring Valley and Haverstraw (ghett-tto!).
I have personally have had a couple bad experiences in Pearl River (I'm Dominican), but I can't say everyone there is rude or a racist. Can't judge the whole town based on that. If you have been there yourself, and seen for the town yourself, you can make a better decision.
I would say the best school districts in Rockland are Orangetown (which includes Pearl River), Clarkstown North and South. Suffern is also very good.
Sorry, but I don't know Bayside at all, so I can't comment. Hope this helps...
