so i have reseached this and i know this question has been asked but for some reason, i... me.. need to ask myself, i need a better answer. Now on CL the listings for rooms for 125 a week and 500 a month, with websites like roominvasion.com or nycroomsforrent roomsite.com.. that one seems sketchy.. talking about make sure you have someone to watch you luggage while you look at rooms, but a couple seem legit, like the first 2 i mentioned. Please someone that has used these.. tell me why they are so cheap.. is it a scam, the type of neighboorhood doesnt really bother me, I lived in all of them, including the worst ever.. nor the other people living in the building. are the locks good. is it like a rooming house, wheres its a house not apartments.. please, i would be heartbroken if my dream of moving out of moms, is crushed that quick... Thanks...

Don't know first-hand or even second, but this website called Interfaith Assemby on Homelessness and Housing lists the NYCityRoomsforRent as well as several others under the header "SROs and Short Term Rentals." (see page 2 of pdf) It seems less likely to be a scam if it's on the site of a non-profit. Watch out for bedbugs.

I dn't know the specific sites, so can't comment on that, nor could we guess which are scams. But I would think that if you choose carefully on Craiglist, or check via schools, you should be okay.
