Hi everyone-

I'm currently in hair school, it is 9-5 Tues through Saturdays. I'm wondering what kind of jobs I could get that are night/evening shifts, like something 6-midnight, etc. but no later than 2am preferably.

NO restaurant jobs as I have no experience in the industry, let alone in New York.

Thanks!

I'd think many stores that are open until 9 or 10 might need people - although in this economy you'll have a lot of competition.

Yeah I realize retail and other shops are open till 9 or 10, but 3-4 hours doesn't seem like long enough of a shift to warrant hiring... especially with the economy as you mentioned

Geez, that's the fast response I've ever seen here.

What about stores that are open to midnight, or 24 hour places?

A Duane Reade just opened down the street here in Williamsburg, but that's a wanna-kill-yourself kinda job. Looking for something that's a little more relevant to my future.

I would think hair salons would stay open late in Manhattan but I haven't found one past 8pm yet. I do have experience as a receptionist in a hair salon so that would be ideal...

Unfortunately, sometimes you have to do "wanna kill yourself kinda jobs" in order to survive and get by until something in your chosen career opens up.

If this is just a job to get you by while you're in school, then take what you can get until something opens in a salon or until you graduate/get your license and can start looking for something in your field.

There are plenty of people ---- me included ---- who are working in "wanna kill myself kinda jobs" simply because that's my only option at this point. I have to pay my rent, put food on my table, and take care of my daughter so I have no choice but to work this stupid job until I can do something in my field.

You could work as a home attendant. It's a fairly easy job to get since there are a a lot of older people that need care and there is a lot of turnover since most don't have the patience for it. You do need to get certified though before you start working, and I believe in most places it will be 2-3 weeks of training before you can start to work.
