Getting from a Bus Terminal to the Subway in Port Authority (New York: middle-class, university)

Hi- next weekend, I will be taking a bus back from Colgate University and I will need to get back to Penn Station from Port Authority. My father thinks that it is unsafe in Port Authority at 12 A.M., and I was wondering how to get from the Bus terminals to the A train (how far of a walk, different floors, estimated time from point a to point b). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The subway is connected to Port Authority. Just follow the signs. It's only one stop to Penn. There are plenty of people in the station at that hour. It's not dangerous.

I've walked through plenty of times late, like midnight and never had a problem. It is well-lit and you shouldn't have any problem. Should be a few minutes walk between the bus terminals and the subway entrance - and I think it is only one long escalator flight from the buses up to the subway (not 100% sure, as I was always headed from the street down to the subway).

Maybe your dad remembers the old days when it was a super scary place? I've heard the stories but this was before my time.

Port Authority to Penn Station requires precisely one stop on the A or E trains (both of which run 24/7). Get on a downtown train at Port Authority, and the next stop is 34 Street/Penn Station. Voila!

As a matter of fact, from Port Authority at night, you could also catch the #1 or 2 trains, both of which will also take you to 34/Penn in only one stop.

The majority of the people who use the Port Authority are corporate types commuting from Jersey or the Hudson Valley. The demographic is decidedly middle-class, no different than the people at Grand Central (although unfortunately the building is far less beautiful).

In other cities, only the poor take busses. It's not like that in New York. Yes, there are long distance passengers, but they're often college students, like you.
