I live in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn and I'm thinking about venturing up to the Bronx to check out Pelham Bay Park. I'd take the 6 all the way up from Broadway/Lafayette to the park stop. Would a 23-year-old male be alright alone, obviously during daylight hours? Any sketchy parts of the surrounding neighborhood or the park that would need to be avoided? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm just wary of getting turned around and ending up on a hot block or something. I'd assume the park is pretty safe, but I just want to make sure since I've heard bad things about the Bronx. Thanks.

I'd venture to say that the area surrounding Pelham Bay Park is one of the safest in the Bronx. The majority of the NE Bronx is pretty safe. A nice mixture of mostly Italian/Hispanic/Greek/Mid-European, with quite a few that are Asian, Black, & Irish &/or mixed. You'd be fine walking around during the day or night as far as I see.

It's perfectly safe, and if your schedule allows, tour the Bartow Pell Mansion. You would need to take the bus from the subway to get to the mansion as it's near the golf course, but it's well worth a visit. The grounds and gardens are free, and there's a nominal charge for a tour of the mansion and carriage house.

Pelham Bay Park is surrounded by some of the best neighborhoods in The Bronx: Country Club,City Island,Pelham Bay and Pelham Gardens. There are no "hot blocks" around there. It is all quite safe,as is the park.

Most of the area may actually be safer than Carroll Gardens.

No. You'll be fine. Pelham Bay Park is huge and the biggest public park in the city by the way. Despite what you've heard not every part of the Bronx is dangerous.
