Hi...here is my situation. I am originally from the Westchester area. My sister and her family currently live in Stamford. I am considering relocating to either Queens or perhaps Greenwhich or Stamford to be closer to family. I am in the process of working to sell or lease my home in MI - if it sells I have already come to terms with the loss on it. I am a consultant, mid 30's, single, female, with six figure salary. And if I relocate there would need to work to build up savings to offset my loss. I was thinking about Queens - Astoria, Sunnyside....as it would be relatively easy to get to Manhattan -mid town area. I might potentially still have to travel out of town for work if there is not a local gig - so access to airport is a consideration.

If I were to compare cost of living in Queens to say Stamford or Greenwich, plus ease in developing a network or friends, etc what are your thoughts? Or other things I should take into consideration. Trying to assess my pros and cons.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Astoria & Sunnyside are both very close to Manhattan.
Rego Park & Forest Hills have both great access to La Guardia & JFK airports and the commute to Manhattan is not too bad although a bit longer than from Astoria & Sunnyside.
Astoria & Forest Hills are both great neighborhoods for local activities depending on what your interests are.

well my opinion is that yes, living in queens will cost you more...but you also have to consider that you won't need a car (so no car and insurance payments), so that definitely offsets some of the housing costs.

Greenwich is one of the most expensive towns in the country. I'm sure Queens would be cheaper.

It's a question of lifestyle. Do you want deciduous suburb or gritty inner-city?

Thanks so far for the feedback. I do have a car...but no car payment...just insurance but might just give it up to a family member depending on the cost of insurance and parking. I have lived in the "burbs" in MI by an all sports lake - currently working in Chicago on a project now which has kind of renewed my interest in city living again.
