Sometimes it feels as if Astoria is the clear winner as far as far as a balance of restaurants/bars,proximity to canal,safety,and cost.

Why didn't I think of that...

Astoria's an excellent choice for the aforementioned. If you can find an apt that is walking distance to the train, you're all set!
