A couple of friends and I are visiting NYC in January. I wanted to know if getting a hotel in the city would be that much more expensive than getting a hotel in NJ and just commuting everyday to the city. I found a great deal on a hotel in Elizabeth, NJ, but I'm worried about the expenses of a daily commute. We are staying for four days and three nights.

It's about $12 per person, per day, if you don't have to take a cab to the station in Elizabeth. Then again, time is money too. What price do you place on convenience?

An alternative is the hotels nearby the airports in Queens. You'll be able to use public transportation.

There are also hotels in Queens nearer to Manhattan than the airports.
For example Days Inn in Long Island City (which is not far from the East River):

There are also hotels in NJ closer than Elizabeth. They might be more expensive than Elizabeth, but still less than the city, and you would just have a PATH fare or be able to take a ferry.

I would either cough up the dough for a nice hotel or go for a cheap one near the city center. You're not going to be there for very long, you probably don't want to have extended transit to places you want to go to.

Along with the hotels near the PATH tubes in New Jersey there are another group of them in the Meadowlands area near the racetrack and Giants Stadium. There are buses that stop really near them and the trip is about 15 to twenty minutes into Port Authority, New York. I would Google them and call for rates. I think they are in East Rutherford.

Thanks for all the advice! We found a hotel in Jersey City; I think thats a bit a closer than queens. Quick question (probably a lame question) what is "PATH". Is that the public transportation?

PATH is a subway service that serves Manhattan (up to 33rd Street), Jersey City, Hoboken, & Newark. Even though it's cheaper than the New York City subway, you can still use NYC subway passes on PATH trains (PATH does have their own tickets too). Since you're hotel is in Jersey City, you'll definitely be within the vicinity of PATH service. Here is the link to the site below:
