Well im fine with it being the anthem, I think its a great song. Although I do think Nas's "New York State Of Mind" is better overall and especially if ur in a gritty mood.

Agreed! That was honestly a much better song in my opinion, and the first one that came to mind when I saw this thread. I like Jay's album and all, but the song really just doesn't do it for me, mostly because he's just talking about himself and his money (again...).

jep NY state of mind is more of a New York Hood anthem.
Anyways I like Empire State Of Mind but i think Frank Sinatra's NY, NY is the real NYC anthem.
frank sinatra's ny, ny is and should be the official anthem...
although you can't speak about plagiarism when it comes to jay and taking new york state of mind and calling it empire state of mind and not say something about frank sinatra's ny, ny which was originally created by a different artist...
and yes, they do play empire state of mind 234234324 times a day. i hated it at first, now i like it but enough is enough.
and welcome to nyc by cam'ron/jay z/juelz santana is a better song, IMHO.
I guess that Jay-Z is somehow not guilty of plagiarizing Billy Joel's title, "New York State of Mind." In any case, if New York City has to have an anthem at all (and I don't necessarily think it does), then Sinatra's classic should be the one.
Actually, while that may be what it seems like.. I'm pretty sure he's just stealing the title from his rival, Nas.
By the way, as much as I love Billy Joel as a musician, he is such a sheister and greedy. He didn't pay any of his band-mates for the records that sold. They were basically playing for him for no money. One of the guys ended up killing himself b/c of it.
Not to mention Billy Joel is dating a 27 year old. I don't think he sets a good positive image for New York.
I'm fine with it, it gets played too much in my opinion though. Its one of many NYC anthems.
