I used to live around there and still pop in from time to time, and I never really felt unsafe. It does get dicier once you start heading east during the night, but for the most part everything is fine (and the dominican grocery stores have some fantastic deals). There's also a weird funny bit of bougie-ness up north on 181st street where you'll have yoga, japanese food, a wine seller, bakery, a mini art gallery, starbucks, burger joint, etc. I always thought it was such a funny stereotype of gentrification, but it's got some good stuff there.
