Somebody just told me they saw on Fox 5 this morning something about a block on Canal closed because of some building safety issue.

Anyone got any link on it?

Probably b/c all those places are illegal...that's why sometimes when you're in there, the will close the doors on you mid-shop. It's illegal to be selling the knock-off things they do. I think it was probably more a "building safety issue."

I saw a piece of it as I strolled by the TV. The only thing I recall was the newscaster saying Canal St. was 'world famous for knock offs' and such.
I wonder how much that area generates in dollar terms. It's always so jam packed.

I don't think that's it. I couldn't find the segment on myfoxny.com but it has something about a building is being evacuated for safety code.

They showed a piece on this on Fox-5 last night. The reported was showing how some of the walls are actually doors and you have to go through one door after the next to get to the counterfeit stuff and, once you're past a door, you cannot get out unless the shop owner lets you out.

Lol some? I'm in Chinatown every weekend and its all fake goods. But you know what? Everyone knows about it too including many consumers who do not mind buying the fake stuff. Otherwise they would not be out there selling the stuff if they didn't sell.
