I am happy to say that after much time and dedication, the South Bronx is not only getting another nicely renovated park, it is also getting its FIRST Dog Run! The park lies in the Longwood neighborhood of the South Bronx, which is just slightly North-East of Mott Haven at the intersection of 156th Street and Fox street. The park will be completed next year. We are also working towards getting another Dog Run in St. Mary's Park @ 149th street. This is a big amenity for the South Bronx, and one that the community will no doubt enjoy, especially we dog owners.

To learn more, see the article about the upcoming park:
$2.5 million renovation begins at Fox Street park*|*Hunts Point Express

And to learn a little about the history of the park and the area, how the Quakers, revolutionary war, and prominent families like Tiffany all were involved in the community, see the link below:

Good luck with that. Expect to be seeing your vet more often in the near future. While Dog runs may be well intended, they are a bad idea.

That's good news, but it wouldn't be the first in the Bronx. There's a dog run in the Oval in Norwood, and one in Van Cordtland Park in Woodlawn, and may be others I don't know about.

Edit: Sorry I misread. I thought you said first in the Bronx rather than South Bronx.

Vantastic..way to look at the negative side of things. Hey kiddie parks are a great idea, but kids get hurt in them. They are a bad idea. Having a place where you can exercise your dog off leash is critical to the care of your dog...they need exercise. Having a dog run where you can socialize a dog safely, in a controlled environment, with other dogs and people, is also critical to having a dog. It is also a place where the community can congregate, talk, meet eachother, discuss neighborhood/dog issues, and a place where people/kids can learn NOT to fear dogs, but to appreciate animals.

If you want to speak of a possible negative to a dog run, that is fine. But the positive of a dog run for the community and animals, greatly outweigh any potential negative you may see.

I've been to a dog run once and would never go back. My friend decided she just had to bring her 2 dogs to a dog run so they could 'socialize'.... Well, it was disgusting. It reeked of urine and, of course, people were letting their dogs poop everywhere and they would barely clean it. And let's not talk about all the "humping" going on. In a word: disgusting.

With all the dog waste, I would worry not only about your dog's health but your own as well.

If these were problems of any significanc, there would not be as many dog runs in the city, they would not be as popular, and they certianly would not be requested by so many communities across the city. You do not have to use a dog run, but the amenity is there for those in the community who appreciate it. Just as much as there are kiddie parks in the community, and you don't have to use those either because you see them as "too dangerous" or filled with "unruly kids." Nonetheless, the amenity is available for those who do find them a positive for the community and are glad to have them.

The dog runs are no different, and they were added because the community requested it. And more are on the way!

Looks like we are getting 2 Dog Parks in the South Bronx now. One is going up in the Longwood section of Hunts Point, on 156th and Fox St, and now another larger Dog Park is going into St. Mary's Park by 149th and St. Anns. Check it out! Go Bronx!

I have been taking my dogs to dog runs for years with no issues. Stay in control of your dog and be aware of the other dogs in the run and you should have no issues. If I notice a dog that is not controlled by it's owner, I leave.
