I'm thinking of moving to the city, and it seems like the salary I will be making will be around 60-65K. When I lived in El Paso, I made 15K, so when I was offered 60-65K i was like CHA CHING. I hear that the cost of living is much higher in NYC, but exactly how much? Is 65K enough to even consider, or am I going to need more to survive? I don't need a playboy loft in Soho or anything. A place to stay with running water, heat, electricity, internet, and no more than 1 hour from the financial district is all I need. Will this kind of salary allow me to live without having to eat ramen and worry about being able to scrounge enough money for rent each month?

You'll be able to spend about 1600 on rent. Enough for a 1 bedroom apartment outside of Manhattan. Are you bringing a car? Because that's a HUGE expense (not to mention pain in the neck) in the city.

Yes, it's enough.

If you want to read other threads on this same topic,
type the following into google
is 60K enough nyc site:city-data.com

And then do the search again substituting 55K for 60K, then 50K, then 45K and then 40K. There are threads on all of those amounts.

is it enough for what?

its hard to say for everyone.... depends on all your other expenses...

i would have to say if you pay your own health insurance, plan on saving enough in a 401k , have a car, plan on taking advantage of city life, have hobbies then noooooo its not a lifestyle i would want to live. but thats me ,im not you..

i think asking folks on the internet for legal advice or whether they can afford a way of life is not the best way to do it. its just to much an individual issue..

i mean is the question could i cut out almost everything in life and not watch every penny or go in to debt to live in manhattan on 65k pre-tax... yes it is, whether i would want to cut everything to a min and live in nyc? noooooooooooo

like those books we had in my hippy days see europe for 5 bucks a day...

Thank you,
If 65K is "enough," well, pardon the cliche, but do the math.

I lived nicely on that in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn with a car. I also had a 401K and health insurance.

Definitely. If you don't have a car your best bet is to find a neighborhood along a subway line. Since you'll be working in lower Manhattan, you should try looking at the Queens neighborhoods like Middle Village or Ridgewood. Woodside, Sunnyside and Jackson Heights are possibilities too but might make your commute a little longer. Also, look at southwestern Brooklyn, like Greenwood, Bay Ridge, or Kensington.
