Los angeles has twice as many people as either Philadelphia or The Bronx but it only had 10 murders per 100,000 people. It simply means that Philadelphia has a much higher murder rate(and overall crime rate) than The Bronx and LA has a lower murder and crime rate.

Many major cities including Chicago,Detroit,Columbus,Memphis,Baltimore,Washing ton,Atlanta,Kansas City,
Cleveland,Miami,St Louis,Cincinnati,Pittsburgh and New Orleans have higher murder rates and Crime rates than The Bronx.

New York City has a population of 8.5 million but a murder rate of only 6.3 per 100,000.It has one of the lowest murder rate and crime rate of any major city in the country.Oakland has the highest violent crime rate(and overall crime rate) of any city followed very closely by Detroit. It's a virtual tie.

i still dont know why people would even compare nyc,s murder rate to cities like cleveland , STl , new orleans etc

all these cities have something very in common which nyc doesn't have no part in.

i think comparing new york cities crime rate to san fran, L.A , Honolulu etc would be much smarter.

honestly the only city who gets a nice comparison is Oakland all though Oakland does not even have 1 million people which is a very stupid comparison.

and also btw honestly to me new york city shouldnt even be called a major city no more, it should be called a "mega" city.

new york has 8 million people , while l.a has 3 or 4 mill , and chicago has like 2 mil.

no city statistically can compare to nyc when doing these stats sorry.

Murders per 100,000 : LA 10,NY 6,Honolulu 2,SF 12
Violent crime per 100,000: LA 580,NY 689,Honolulu 284,SF 995
Property Crimes per 100,00 : LA 2,600,NY 1,700,Honolulu 702,SF 4,500
Looks like Honolulu is definitely safer than NY or LA or SF

Default What is crime REALLY like?

I read about several hundred murders per year in NYC, now coming from England it sounds like some kind of third world country with a massive crime problem.

However, I've read in many places that crime in the UK is higher than the US (apparently its much safer to walk around NYC at night than London).

In the UK, we have a pretty bad problem with gangs of kids randomly picking on innocent people and beating them up, sometimes to death. In fact just this weekend in my home town, a guy was walking home in a quiet part of town and was beaten up and impaled on some railings.

For the average person who isn't a member of a gang, nor has any interest in being part of a gang how much of a day to day issue is crime in NYC? There seems to be a lot of talk about it on here, so its obviously an issue.

The way I see it, you have a higher murder rate because its easy to shoot and kill someone. We have a higher crime rate with regards to random violence because our culture is drink as much as you can in the shortest time possible.

General question: which precincts do you think have made the most improvement the last decade?

SuperMario, can you figure which precincts have the highest murder rate? I think that would be most helpful instead of painting a whole borough with one brush.

Actually,I just did calculations for 2009 and came up with different numbers. I took the official populations of each borough and divided that number by 100,000 to come up with a # for hundreds of thousand population and then divided the total number of murders in 2009 in each borough by that number.
e.g Manhattan has an official population of 1.6M.1.6 M divided by
100,000 = 16. Total murders for Manhattan in 2009 were 59.
59 divided by 16 =3.68.
The biggest discovery was that I really overestimated the murders per 100,000 for The Bronx when I previously came up with 13. It's actually only 8,making The Bronx safer than even more cities than I thought ! Really, every borough is safer than all but a few US cities.
Here is how it works:

Borough/Population /div by 100,000 /2009 murders /murders per 100,000
BX ...1.4M ... 14 ...113 ...8.07
BK ....2.5M ...25....201....8.04
M......1.6M.....16.....59....3.68
S.I..... .5M.......5.....16....3.2
Q.......2.3M.....23.....55....2.5

If trends so far this year continue Brooklyn may well steal the title away from The Bronx! What will everybody have to say if that happens?

Actually violent crime in NYC is not( or shouldn't be) that big an issue for the average person on a day to day basis until they watch TV..Probably 70% of violent crimes are gang or drug dealing related. They kill each other off.Another 20% of violent crimes are crimes where the victim and the assailant know each other.Friends killing friends, lovers killing lovers, jealous lovers killing rivals, crimes of passion, etc

We have very little of the kinds of violent crime you describe where innocent people just get attacked and when it does happen it's usually a whacko doing the attacking. Here the gang members attack and kill each other and there is an occasional innocent bystander hit by a stray bullet but in general gangs keep their violence to themselves.

NY( and even it's "high crime" areas) is one of the safest cities in the US.
