[LEFT]Why do college presidents and the CUNY chancellor make more than the mayor. The chancellor makes over half a million. Anyone know why their salaries are so disproportionate? I don't we were in the middle of a big recession, why do they have unilateral authority to raise their pay!

Quote:
The City University of New York Board of Trustees granted generous raises to top CUNY officials, even after approving tuition increases for students.
Chancellor Matthew Goldstein will get an extra $40,000 this year, bumping his overall compensation to $580,000. The 9% salary increase comes atop a 14% increase in November 2008.

I don't think it's that uncommon- public universities love to make a profit. I just found out that Brooklyn College cut the grad program I was applying to. Thankfully I found this out before I sent off the check, but from what I understand, they are cutting programs left and right.

I thought universities were "not for profit"!!! I don't know why running the CUNY system and running a CUNY university pays more than double what the mayor makes running the entire city. Actually the CUNY Chancellor makes more than the president of the United States.

The mayor 'makes' one dollar per year for his work.

The mayor is also a "billionaire". BTW, I am not trying to justify an outrageous salary for the CUNY president, there is no justification for it, plain and simple.

Default not realistic

I don't think it is fair to compare the salary of the chancellor to the mayor or President, as they get so many perks, which makes their salary feel like it's worth, a million dollars. I think the pay for the position is fair for someone that is innovative and competent to do the job, whether that description fits the current counselor is subjective.

The reasoning the pay increases were that the group of presidents were teh presidents have raised teh endowmwnts to unprecedents levels over teh last few years for research and renovations. this could just be one of those things were they received the most, not due to hard work, but just a reflection of the flush times New York had over the last 5-6 years.
