NYC has it's dangerous areas like any other city. I don't care if I am on the UES @ 3am or the worst housing project in the city, I never let my guard down.

I think the bottom line, besides being street smart and aware, is to look to the root of all of this..WHY are there kids/people just proudly hanging out on the street all day/all night? That boredom and possible poverty definitely does something to people, causing some aggression, etc...WHY is this ok? Projects were not built to be collections of people who want to hang out all day...they were built to provide affordable housing for people who are WORKING...I think, instead of talking about how great someone is for being so hard for living in certain areas, people should buck up and change things for the better...this many not be a popular opinion, but it's more uplifting than comparing bad precincts in terrible neighborhoods...

Jobs are diminishing for people who are on the lowest social/economic rungs. The lowest of these groups have a 30% unemployment rate. People making $150,000 or more (or was it $300k?) have a 3% unemployment rate.
What does a society do with these people who probably cannot be trained for much and for whom there are fewer and fewer employment opportunities available?
I do think anyone on government assistance who is able bodied should be doing some work in return for it - assisting in cleaning and painting in government buildings, washing off graffiti, picking up litter, washing dishes, etc.
