Hi All,

I'm moving back home to NYC after living away for a long time and I'm trying to find one bedroom rental that is affordable and a decent commute to the WTC area. Chinatown is one of the places that I've been thinking about, but there doesn't seem to be a lot up on Craigslist. I imagine that a lot of the apartments are advertised locally and probably in Chinese. Does anyone have any suggestions about how a non-Chinese speaker can best go about hunting for a deal in Manhattan's Chinatown? Thanks a lot!

If you have the time, walk around the area - you will often see signs on buildings for vacancies now that many owners are paying the finder's fee.

If you see a building you like ring the super and see if he knows, if not ask for the management's companies number and call them directly.

I believe you're right about apartments in Chinatown; most are not likely to be listed. The old fashioned, low-tech method of apartment hunting might serve you best in that part of town: go there and look for vacancy signs! (Just for the record, there's been a new "extension" of Chinatown, centering along 8th Avenue in Brooklyn. Take the N train to the 8th Avenue station, and follow the crowds).
