I'm planning a move from Jax, FL to NYC at the end of May, beginning of June. If anyone could throw me some helpful tips, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'll tell ya, I lived in Jax for about a year for business before and it was pretty bad.

You need to be more specific in your questions and what you want to know, otherwise we wouldn't know what to tell you?

Yes! Jax sucks. I hate what I'm doing and am looking to move. I'm flying up there at the end of May to do some apartment shopping. I probably will not have a job when I move, however, I've been looking into some temp agencies. How difficult is it to rent when you're unemployed? I'll more than likely have anywhere between $7,000-$10,000 saved up. Will anyone rent if I don't have a job, and how hard is it to find work (of any kind) in NYC?

It's extremely difficult to rent without employment that's verifiable. I would recommend NOT coming here until you have a job.

With that being said, how difficult is it to find work in NYC?

Again, you need to be more specific. What is your background in? Do you have a college degree? Experience? What kind of job do you want?

I can't answer this without a general idea of what you want to do or what your looking for. There are many people that are unemployed and will be competition for you.

NYC is an expensive city and pretty risky to move here without a job secured first. Majority of landlords will not rent to you without references and verifiable income. Even if you find housing, the $7K-$10 won't last you very long without a job.

As of now I'm a teacher in the Duval County Public School system. I do have a teaching certificate, but it expires in 2011. I've been teaching for the past two years. My degree is in music.

Oh...however, I have no interest in teaching ever again. EVER. Worst profession ever. I'll work anything as long as it can get me outta Jax.

Well, the good news is that the Board of Ed has a hiring freeze on, so you couldn't get a teaching job if you wanted to.

The bad news is, there just aren't a lot of jobs around. You'll be up against stiff competition to get a decent paying job, especially since you'll be up against people who have professional backgrounds in most fields. You'll also find it can be harder to get menial jobs (McDonalds, etc) because they assume you'll quit as soon as something better comes along.

Do you have any friends here who can either hook you up with a job or let you crash for a month or two while you job hunt?

I have a friend up there, but I'm not too sure if he would let me shack up with him or not. I'd like to find a sublet or a landlord who would let me rent with my current situation. I have great references and recommendations, letter of employment, pay stubs and technically I'll still be employed when I move. I'll still have checks coming in over the summer without actually working, but once August gets here my contract runs out. My brother will be moving with me so I already have a roomie. Hopefully that will give me enough time to find a job. What do you guys think?
