I posted this in the Long Island message boards and received a some great replies. It was recommended I also post here...
I just received a great opportunity to take a management position in Long Island NY. This position will entail much more responsibility. I'm currently in Seattle making approximately $39,000. I have been offered a salary of $50,000 and there is little negotiation room. I'm a little disappointing in the salary-I thought it would be a little more.
I will receive a relocation package-I don't all the details yet but it should cover all moving expense.
I'm afraid I will be taking home close to what I take home now after NY state taxes.
Anyone have knowledge on the actual living expenses? I currently have a roommate in Seattle but I'd live alone in NY and I am looking at forest hills and Jackson heights. Are those okay places? My work will be in garden City.
I will most likely still need my car and I'm worried that I will pay more a month for car insurance. I might sell and re-buy a vehicle in NY but regardless, most of the posts I have read recommend a car on Long Island.
ANY advice, first hand knowledge, relocation tips etc. would be appreciated!! Thank You.
There are very nice parts of Forest Hills and Jackson Heights, but it's more expensive to keep a car because of the cost of parking and insurance in the city.
That said, given the cost of decent rentals in closer-in Nassau County, I'd seriously look at the numbers, comparing the salary in both locations, factoring city resident income tax, and car insurance rates/parking too. In Queens, I'd also consider Bayside, since you will have a car, and it's easy to get to Garden City from there, and there's more parking than in an area like Forest Hills.
