How safe is the neighborhood around 129th and Lenox for suburban bred students to live in? apartment looks ok, but concern getting from subway to apt at night. anybody live around there and know the area?
Harlem is Harlem. Yes, there are "nice" parts but it's still Harlem. They've been saying for decades that Harlem is changing, "rising", etc. but I wouldn't live there.
Oh, and I'm just being honest so I don't need any "flames" coming here to argue.

Well it's your opinion, but what Harlem is to you is not what it is to other people...
I'm curious to know why "suburban bred" students would choose Harlem, of all the neighborhoods in New York? You're certainly going to find it an eye-opening experience--and I may be pretty guilty of understatement when I say that.
No matter what though if you've been a suburbanite your whole life, your bound for an adjustment moving into a more urban area. If you want something less urban you can try areas that are a little more burb less urban in the outer boroughs but it's not going to give you the convenience an area like Harlem can...
I also agree with Seventh that there are nicer spots within Harlem. Harlem is a fairly big area comprised of about 4-5 sub-neighborhoods, I think it's actually a little ridiculous to generalize the whole area.

exactly.....and we've agreed on this point before - harlem has good and bad blocks.....i dont think 129th and lenox is one of the more desirable ones....if i was moving to harlem, i would choose either riverside drive or anywhere along broadway or amsterdam, or madison ave or fifth ave south of 125th...i know there's other pockets, but to me those are the biggest ones, after that it would be broken down by a block-to-block basis.
