Hello,
I am planning to move to the city this summer after spending five years in Pennsylvania working on my degree. I have my degree in Elementary Education and am attending a NYC job fair to hopefully begin teaching in the fall within the city. I am wondering if anyone has information about different schools in the city. I'm mostly interested in which schools would be easiest to get to using public transportation. I grew up on Long Island, so while I never lived in the city, I am familiar with the subways and buses.

I am also planning to live in the city, so if anyone has information on average utility bills so that I can determine how much rent I can afford, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

In order to afford living in Manhattan on a teacher's salary you will either need parental support or a couple of roommates. It is very expensive. Many of the NYC teachers I know living in Manhattan have rich parents who help subsidize the rent.

Are you going to the Bronx job fair tomorrow? I'm going to it too.

I don't necessary need to live in Manhattan, but I don't want to live in a bad neighborhood. Right now, I am more worried about finding the job because once I know where I am working, I can figure out where I want to live based on the commute. This is also why I am curious about schools and their distance from bus stops/subway stations.

My mom has offered to assist me, but my friends all call me spoiled and I'd prefer to try and do it on my own, or with as little assistance as possible. I don't have any college loans to pay back, so I already know that I have an advantage over the average college grad in the finance department.

As I mentioned, I am just trying to get a rough estimate of utilities because I already know the salary for a first year teacher.

Yes, I'm going to the job fair in the Bronx tomorrow. Wish me luck.

The only place I would ever live in in the Bronx would be Riverdale or City Island. Brooklyn and Queens have some great public schools, and there might be more affordable neighborhoods than in Manhattan. On the otherhand, there is nothing like living in Manhattan, especially if you are young and single. In Brooklyn, you will find young grads in places like Williamsburg, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights and Boreum Hill. These places are not cheap, but a bit better than most of the nice Manhattan neighborhoods.
