I wondered the same thing when I saw the original post earlier today.I almost advised that she just get in the car and drive because I don't think we got more than 6" in my neighborhood in The Bronx and the streets were practically bare.
You're fortunate. My neighborhood seems to have gotten 8-10" easily.
It I could have driven through the snow, I would have, but there was just too much snow and the street was impassable. My neighbor tried to drive down the street and after about 20 minutes gave up. No matter which way he tried to go, he kept getting stuck and other neighbors were even helping by pushing his car to no avail. Thank goodness we were able to get him back into his original parking spot because we would have really been screwed if he was stuck in the middle of the street when the plow finally did come!
My street still hasn't been plowed since early yesterday. This morning a fire truck was unable to pass at the intersection of 7th Ave and 11th St due to a stalled car. The firemen exited their fire truck and heaved the stalled car out of the intersection so that they would be able to pass. How DANGEROUS is that? Lives were definitely at stake. I lived in NYC all my life and have never seen the city as crippled as it was and still is now due to the amount of snow that fell.
I think the point is that the response was not what it should be. Lots of $ was paid out in OT for Sanitation workers who did NOTHING. I was on my way home from work at 7 last night and none of the emergency routes were plowed. I've seen as much as 30 inches of snow that was plowed out much faster than this.
Out of curiosity, how much snow fell in Flushing? Because with all the screaming and yelling about accumulations of ten to 18 inches, I can tell you that here in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, we got somewhere between four and five inches. That was all! (Didn't see a single snow plow; none were necessary).
Good for you Fred in Midwood (Go Hornets!), but here in Astoria we're snowed in!! Side streets are unpassable, and main streets are barely passable. Astoria Blvd. (a main street) hadn' been plowed as of 3pm!
Getting around is mainly by FOOT!
I'd say we got around 12 to 24 inches; exacerbated by large snow drifts.
Haven't seen anything like this since I was a child. Haven't misses a NYC blizzard yet.
i think this thread was started from earlier this year
LOL just realized that. i wasnt the one that re-upped it though
