I am still thinking about moving to Manhattan next year. If I rented a 500 square foot studio how much would the utilities cost about. (heat, gas, water). I just want to make sure I can do. Is there any other expense to live in the city besides the basics food etc. Thanks for your help.
You won't usually have to pay for heat, but you WILL have to pay for electricity! And in the summer, sometimes even if there's central A/C, that'll include running the unit's fan for the A/C. I live in a large apartment - very large - but I'd say your electricity should run around $40/month if you don't like to run much stuff. Double that for the summer with the A/C. I don't cook much and my gas runs around $12-15/month. Hope you're not planning to take a car to the city...
I pay for electric every month includes (air, heat & lights) about 180.00. Water is 50.00 a month Cable 130.00 and sewer 12.00 a month and that is in Florida. If heat is not in the rent how much would the heat bill cost a month? Does these utilities some what watch what you pay up there? Thanks.

Where are in Manhattan are planing to rent? Believe me, the rent is your issue not the utilities. If you can handle the 2000 month on the rent the 100 bucks you pay on utilities isn't a big deal.
I lived in Manhattan for almost 7 years. Recently moved to Brooklyn. When you move across the rivers, you save on almost everything (groceries etc).
I am glad that I had the Manhattan experience, but am really enjoying Brooklyn. I still work in the City, but have an different environment at home.
Good luck and PM me if you want any inside information.
As others have said, in most cases in NYC heat and water is part of your rent. You pay Con-Ed for electric and gas, if you have a gas stove. I live in a tiny (400 sq. ft.), 5th (top) floor studio apt. on the south side of a building (it gets hot in the summer...). For July, August and most of September I have my A/C on most of the time. I cook at home quite a lot (not very NYC-typical!), so probably use a bit more gas than most. On average my Con-Ed bill is between $60-$70 a month. For those three summer months it spikes up to $130-$150.
I am soon to be moving into a House in Kensington Brooklyn and there will be 3-4 people sharing the house. The house has just been remodeled so they dont yet know how much the bills will cost. The bills include
-- Electric
-- Gas (stove, heat, and eventually the dryer when they get a new one.)
-- Water bill
Does anyone have any idea how much the utilities in this situation will cost? Or how much the cost of utilities for a family home in this area usually run? Or even where I can get this information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Amy
