I think I've come officially full circle on this website. My first posts on this board, back before becoming a board regular who participated in all of the forums, were inquiring about a potential move to Brooklyn about one year ago. That move got delayed and delayed for various professional and financial and personal reasons and now here we are one year later, where I'm finally "ready" and I'm looking to make the same move a reality again. While not set in stone, yet again, I have rough plans to move to Brooklyn within the next month or so (I'm thinking July 1st will be the date). I was initially going to move elsewhere in the country and haven't ruled that entirely out either if I stumble upon a terrific job opportunity. Otherwise, I've decided to give New York a shot, at least for one year. I lived there very briefly (almost just like a long vacation) a few years back and am determined to try living there for a decent period of time at least once in my life, and the pieces seem to be falling into place for a move right now to be the smartest thing. I will be rooming with a friend, most likely in the area around Bay Ridge or Dyker Heights. I do not have a job lined up. I know that presents a problem. I will be visiting soon in an attempt to first secure employment, and then, to look for an apartment. I am not too picky with jobs in the sense that really, I'm just looking for something, anything really, so that I can secure housing. I thought a temp agency would be my best bet. I know that they can be very hit or miss. Does anyone have any good experience or word of mouth recommendations on a particularly good temp agency in the area?
In a big city like that, there are multitudes of agencies.
Yes, I realize that which is why I'm basically asking for people that have specific firsthand experience with temp agencies that they or someone they know were satisfied with. Some temp agencies are great. Others suck. So if possible, it'd be nice to be pointed in the direction towards one of the better ones rather than just poring through the Yellow Pages and choosing a random one.
Whatever you do, DO NOT work for Apartment Temporaries Inc. Their corporate office is based in Texas. They are a very unprofessional company. The office takes days to return your phone call, payroll checks are late and returned nonsufficient funds repeatedly after being deposited. Once you contact them to receive a resolution, they do not resolve the issue in a timely manner. Please take the time to consider this before beginning any employment with them. Working for this company is not worth the stress for the property or on yourself.
What kind of temp agency? I know the market for clerical/secretarial temps is way, way down. Even the best people at the best agencies don't have work right now.
Got a job the next day. Just when they ask if you are willing to work one day here, one day there say NO! They ask that to see how desperate/lazy you are.
I've read through old threads on temp agencies and I had a question about the current state of the market in NYC. I saw that last year that was a shortage of temp jobs. I was looking to dive into exploring temp jobs this summer. I have a 4 year college degree and was wondering if the market has shaped up and would it be easier to find a job this year?
