I have only been to Manhattan for work in Midtown and Financial District in the past. Now my work requires me to stay in the city during the week so I am looking for a place to stay.
Is 116th ST & 5th Ave a relatively safe place? I need to walk off Subway 6 around 9pm-midnight and get to my apt, probably alone.
Any comment, thought, or experience would be greatly appreciate.
You would probably be ok, especially when the weather is warm and there are a lot of people out and about. Can you take the 2 or 3 train to Lenox and W 116th? You would only be 1 block away from 5th Ave.

Thank you DAS for your input. My work place is along the park/lexington line in midtown --> hence subway 6 from this location of 116 & 5th.
Another question: how does this location compare to
W. 109th and Bway is near the 110th St and Bway station, very close to where I live, it is pretty safe around there, the stores on Bway are open until about 11PM some until midnight, there are restaurants and bars open as well.
145th and Bway is pretty much the same way. I have family in that area.
Both areas have many amenities, and conveniences.
There are homeless around both areas, but most won't bother you. You have to take the necessary precautions in both areas.
The basic differences between the 2 areas is that there are more people of color on 145th and Riverside Drive, but the residents are more stable and long term.
109th St and Bway may have more Columbia students, and the residential population is more transitory.

You should probably go each of these areas on separate days after say 10pm and just around a few blocks to get the overall vibe. To me, all three are good picks. If you're working on the 4/5/6 lines though I would go with the 116th & 5th choice for convenience sake. It's not a bad area really. Mostly West African immigrants and a few White people sprinkled here and there as of late.

it's still majority black/african americans. the projects (johnson houses i think) are a block away on 115th. most of the Africans are further west, especially around Frederick Douglass Blvd. but yeah there's a condo development re:white people right across the street w/ a NY sports club as the bottomfloor tenant.

I agree with all responses you have received so far. If you are using the 4/5/6 trains 116th and 5th Ave is the most convenient location.

If you can use the 1/2/3 lines the other 2 locations are good options.
I agree with ViralMD that 109th and Bway is the best location, because you are near Riverside Park and Central Park, and all the conveniences of the UWS.
You may have a very large apt on 145th and Riverside Drive, that you may not want to refuse. You also have the State Park there.
I would check out all 3 locations after 10PM as Mayorofnyc suggested, and I would also go around on Saturday at around 11AM, to get the neighborhood vibes, and to check out stores etc.
