Does anyone have any info on the people who sell beer out of carts on the platform at Penn Station and Jamaica? How do you get into this? Are they employed by someone, are they private contractors?

Before you get involved, check with MTA to find out if it's legal. That could save you a lot of headaches.

Fred I'm pretty sure the OP's talking about those guys that sell beer and even some cocktails right on the LIRR platforms. As long as I've known about the LIRR I've been seeing that so I have to imagine that is legal...

It's definitely legal. There was a law suit a few years ago when a drunk LIRR passenger got injured when he fell"through the gap" under the influence of alcohol sold on the platform and on the train. Some people wanted the practice of selling on the platforms/trains banned but it didn't happen.

I wouldn't try to freelance it though. It's probably all controlled by one company with ties to the mafia and to at least a few MTA or LIRR big wigs. You'd probably get your legs broken if you tried it on your own!
It's been going on forever.

Thanks everyone... I'm not an idiot, if one company owns it cool, or not, I'm not going to pick up a cart and start selling beer on the platform without a license.

I wonder because when I ride the train in the PM rush hour, some people seem mighty thirsty. lol

About the lawsuit (well I didn't know about the lawsuit) but I knew about the MTA study and they concluded consuming a few drinks on the train is not going to impair someone enough to fall into the ever feared gap lol. People who are at a level of intoxication where they could hurt themselves by walking usually got that way before boarding the train (hello 2-4am train) and shouldn't ban hard working people who want to enjoy a beverage on the train.
