Hey all! I'm considering a job offer at JFK airport, but don't know much about the area. Can anyone recommend neighborhoods to look at? I can't afford much more than $900 a month for rent, so I'm probably looking at a roommate situation, which is fine.

Ideally, I'd like to move somewhere where I can commute to work by public transportation but that owning (and parking!) a car is also feasible. Culturally, I'd like to live somewhere diverse with a writing/artistic community. Any recommendations would be very welcome!

Briarwood and Kew Gardens are very close and you can take bus/train to JFK. Additionally, around Jackson Heights.

For approx. $950 a month one can rent a large studio apt. in Rego Park, Queens which has good public transportation to JFK.

You're gonna have to make some trade-offs.
All the neighborhoods close (or with good transportation) to JFK are in Queens, vs All the neighborhoods with a decent amount of artistic scenes are in Brooklyn/Manhattan.

In addition to the ones people mentioned above, I would add Howard beach for a safe neighborhood with a very short commute to JFK.

A good compromise would be rego park or kew gardens, since you'd be close enough to JFK and also have good transportation into Manhattan

Ozone park is really close. Also, Lawrence in long island (five town) is good too. I second Howard beach as well.

Also, we live near springfield gardens/Rosedale and it's close/we're safe.
