Hi.
I'm thinking of moving with my family to the US next year and working in New York City. We're used to the countryside, the coast within easy reach and good schools where we live in the UK so would like to find something similar in the States. It needs to be less than an hours commute from central New York. Would anybody be kind enough to recommend somewhere we should look at to live. Our daughters are aged 10 and 11. Thank you.

Hi Neil,
I think you can find what you're looking for in several places in both Fairfield County, Connecticut or Westchester County (NY). Both offer easy commutes to the city and have town beaches. I am partial to Darien, CT as I lived there for many years. Fairfield County and Westchester are very expensive, but it may all be relative to what you spend in the UK and the strength of the pound. The schools in these areas are great. Oh, and just to clarify, the term "central new york" refers to a specific region in New York State including Syracuse and its surrounds. Syracuse is about 6 hours from NYC. Were you perhaps thinking of "midtown" Manhattan?
We used the same great realtor in Darien for each of our three moves (we loved the town, just needed more room) and I'd be happy to pass her name on to you if you want. Other people will give you more information on some terrific places to live in that area.

North Shore of LI in Nassau County and Western Suffolk.
Do you have any idea of your price range? Amount of land you would like? There are nice places like Manhasset which is a little more populated, and places like Old Westbury that is less so. Not sure how rural a place you could really find within 1 hr from NYC, but I'm sure there are a number of places where you could find at least an acre or 2. This would likely cost you, though, over $1million.
More details would be nice. I say LI b/c of the excellent schools, low crime, abundant shopping, parks, and some of the best beaches around.
Northern NJ, Westchester, and Fairfield County, CT are also very nice areas. All have different feels, etc. even from town to town.

"Central New York?" Do you mean New York City? Or someplace like Syracuse, which is IN central New York?
