If you're gonna move between cars, I would assume that holding the door of one car while grabbing the door of the other would be the best way to do it, but still could leave room for an accident.
Why do people move between cars anyway? Is there something so incredibly better in the next car that you're going to risk your life to get there.. or is it just the thrill?
I Do It All The Time, Nobody caught me. Theres Gates So We Wont fall out Unless your drunk and then you fall and you get sliced :O
Seems you've just been lucky so far. I tell you though, I wouldn't have the slightest sympathy if you received a summons or fell.
Once again - stupidity reigns supreme in this City.

People like him are the reason nobody could ever make me feel bad if an "incident" happened on any train I was working.
LOL at all this garbage about it being illegal. I've never seen people go in between the cars to pee or hide or flash people or anything like that.
I've only seen it in the cases of the panhandlers and salesmen who want to go through the whole train as quickly as possible.
Or the case when a homeless person stinks up a car so badly and some people decide not to wait for the next exit.
Or the case where people arrive at the platform and can't get into the car that they want because the train is already at the station. So they go through the doors to be in the car closest to the exit where they're getting off or to the next car with seats. EX, train is at the station and about to leave and you are near the very last car, you get on as the train is leaving the station. You move up 2 cars to go where you need to be. This is the MOST common reason for going in between the doors as every second saved in a station can be precious to many.
I see these all the time on trains where they don't lock the doors. I'd have to imagine that those who get hurt these days would have to be those who are on drugs or alcohol.
And I won't even get into all the times I see the conductors moving in between cars to do their job, moving back and forth of the 2 middle most cars.
The key to moving between cars while the train is in motion is don't. However, there are times I've done this and times where myself or others couldn't because of locked doors. This, as far as I'm concerned is far worse than pulling this dangerous move. Beside the "hygienic" concerns of some homeless or other riders a few sited, it would be pretty devastating to end up trapped with potentially dangerous persons or situations. Trains do, in fact, stop between stations for minutes at a time on rare occasions. This is a city after all, and humans are generally unpredictable when they're decent, let alone questionable as to character or intent when they seem otherwise. In other words I'd rather have the option. The best advice I found posed in this thread: "At some point, people just have to take responsibility for their own actions". Doors that are locked pretty much make this basic right and responsibility a potentially dangerous moot point.

One beautiful sunny afternoon, I was working on the B train and there we were, crossing the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn. I saw some guy standing between the cars and facing at a right angle. Nobody had to tell me what he was doing; he was urinating.
Of course. I assume the stream was directed straight at the third rail, right?

Neither of those reasons are good enough to move between the cars. I doubt any homeless person can stick up the whole car, and if you got into the wrong car, just get off at the next station and move to the correct one.
Yes, they are good enough reasons to move between the cars, especially in a city like this where people are often pressed for time. The thing is, most people know when to do it, I haven't seen many crossing cars when a train is on a curve.
To me, it's illegal for the same reason jaywalking is illegal.
And if you haven't seen one person stink up a whole car, keep riding. You'll see it eventually.
If it was so horribly dangerous to walk between cars, would they allow conductors and police to do it?
