My budget is max 1500. Somewhere SAFE and malls around..I looked in craiglist and there are lots of studio for 1200 ~ 1500 range near by.. what are the arreas should I avoid??? How's upper east and west? Harlem? Washington heights????any recommendation??? Also, I need to be close from my school. My max commute time is 20min. Thank you

oh good god. From the looks of your post you have not been to NYC. Malls nearby? at 1500 you can find a studio in the upper east. It will be in a walk up and very uninspiring, but its doable. It will give you a fairly easy commute to the east 20s on the 6 train. door to door, leave 45 min. Your 20 min commute time and budget arent going to work.

You can try the NYU housing see if they have R.E. broker they work with if you DONT want to live on campus or with a roomie...they may have studios for 1 student.

You can also look into queens...LIC, Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Rego Park...Rego Park has a mall called the Queens Mall. All have great Transit to NYU Dental school. and for your budget you can get a BIGGEr apt in queens.

ok, I have to rephrase my sentence. I meant grocery store, restaurants around the housing.. not the mall such as MACY or SEARS. Is it really 45 min door to door from NYU dental school to Upper East side? how is upper east side????

The UES is a very nice neighborhood, overall. It ranges from less expensive walk-ups to some of the most expensive townhouses in the city. Less expensive apartments are most likely going to require a walk to the subway, since there's no line east of Lexington.

A twenty minute commute means getting from your 4th floor walk up apartment to your mailbox in the building's lobby. Just getting from street level to the subway platform is 10 to 15 minutes. No such thing as a 20 minute commute to school. Restaurants, food markets, fruit stands are all over the place. Finding a place to buy food will be a non-issue. They are not in "malls." They are outside on the street, every shape, variety, and price range. You will not find large supermarkets with wide aisles with plenty of room for shopping carts. In some spots, there literally are Starbucks across the street from each other. Manhattan is a very dense place.
