Most dams screw up the environment and there are now several movements afoot to dismantle many dams that were erected without enough foresight to see the damage they would do.
On a smaller scale, there once was a place on the island of Manhattan called Fresh Water Pond. It was located where City Hall now stands. Nicer than a parking lot, but don't you sometimes wish the pond was still there instead?
I read that City Hall has sump pumps going in the sublevels 24/7.
It was called Collect Pond, near Foley Square, and is now called Collect Park.
...And one of the major reasons why Collect Pond was drained was that its usage changed. Instead of a reservoir, which is what it was for the Dutch in the mid-17th century, people began treating it as a kind of open garbage dump. You can just imagine what it must have smelled like during a typical hot, humid New York City summer!
