Question for those of you who have moved cross country (or at least a significant distance) to NYC....how did you do it?

We are currently looking at three options:

1) Full Service Movers
2) Rent a "do it yourself" truck (i.e. U-Haul, Penske, etc.)
3) Use "Relocubes" from ABF, I believe they would have to be dropped at the ABF terminal in Maspeth and then we'd have to hire a local mover to move our things from there to our future apartment.

I am the only driver in our family (husband is legally blind), and we have a 2 year old. The "do it yourself" truck is not looking all that appealing due to these 2 factors. Full Service movers can cost major bucks - so the Relocubes are looking more and more appealing, but will still cost a good Grand over the do it yourself truck....but I'd like some personal stories/suggestions....

Anyone ever use Relocbues (or the like) during your move to NYC? How did it go?

Last time I moved to NYC I literally sold everything I owned, bought a blow up mattress, packed two suitcases and bought a 1 way plane ticket. Can't do that so much anymore with a husband and a child!

Well....after doing more research and getting more quotes from full-service movers, speaking with my husband more - and even being tempted to go the "sell everything, but a one-way ticket" route...we have decided to go for the ABF Relocubes, and then hire a local mover to take the items from their center in Maspeth to our future apartment. The total cost will be about $2,500 (plus 3 one-way plane tickets) - which isn't too shabby in the grand scheme of things.

I'll try to post back here in June after our move and let ya know how it went...hopefully it will be helpful to someone else in the future.

My wife and I are also planning our move to NYC. We looked into the Relocubes but aren't sure those'll work for us. We currently live in a tower, and would need to use a freight elevator to load up the cube(s) in a couple hours then have them hauled away. Is this doable? It looks like they really want to drop off the cubes and leave them over the weekend...

I moved from England, so i did the "sell everything and start over" method. Turned out to be a good thing because the space I ended up in would not have fit all my stuff.

I moved from Michigan and left my furniture at home in my mom's basement. Everyone's situation is different, I found a furnished apartment before I left, and ended up taking the contents of my life with me on the Amtrak in four suitcases lol. I try to accumulate as little as possible, as I will be moving again in a few months. And probably again shortly thereafter that... you do a lot of moving around in this city, it's pretty much par for the course. Try to travel light if possible.

From the little I know about it all-no it's not possible, BUT, give them a call and find out. They do a "terminal to terminal" type delivery too -so maybe the terminal is close enough to you that a local mover would be cheap? You have to do terminal in NYC and hire a local mover, which is an additional cost, but still cheaper than full-service movers.

The only reason we chose the Relocubes was because the cost was pretty good and the many, many positive reviews I read on various websites/forums. I figured there may be something cheaper out there, but I wanted to be sure the move went as smoothly as possible as well, so we are willing to pay a bit more for a good experience. Does movex have good reviews? I've never heard of them...?
