I can afford $1000 rent on a studio, I'm cool with it being tiny. Where should I look in Queens and Brooklyn? I am a 22 year old female, I would like to live somewhere safe, and maybe where there are other people my age. It would also be helpful if I knew the commute to Manhattan (I will be working right next to Madison Square Park), but I can googlemap that also. I currently have a commute that is about 30 minutes door to door.
I will be moving soon, and I have a place to stay in Manhattan for a month or two while I look for a place. So once I get there I will start visiting different areas, looking at different places, trying to find somewhere comfortable. I just want to know where is possible on a $1000 monthly rent budget.
Recommendations on where to live with roommates (between 700 and 900 a month) would be nice to, in case I decide to go that route.
Close subways to Madison Sq Park are the 6, the R & W and the F (F is the furthest, but still not far). Google maps will show you this.
For a $1000 studio and for quickest commute, I think you are better off in Queens rather than Brooklyn. #1 suggestion is Astoria for commute & to be around others your age. I think Sunnyside could be a good option as well. You would take the 7 train to Grand Central and change to the 6.
You can check out Jackson Heights (F train all the way; it runs express in Queens so maybe 25 minutes to 23rd St.?) but I think you are better off in the other 2 places because of demographics.
Sunnyside, Astoria only a few mins from the city, Woodside Jackson Heights, Elmhurst. All VERY CLOSE to the City. You can take the bus or train from these locals

Why would anyone take a bus from any of these neighborhoods to midtown, let alone down to 23rd st?
Bensonhurst or Bath Beach you can get a 1 bedroom for the money. It is safe here, train to the city takes 40 minutes, stores all over.
No nightlife here. Not many restaurants either. It is a working class hood, but I like it and the price is right for me, thank you very much!!
It is not convenient at all to get from Sunnyside, Woodside, JH or Elmhurst to 23rd/Madison by bus
The bus is more convenient than the subway from those locations to E23rd and Madison if you have a broken leg.
