Chickens are making a big comeback in NYC. And NYC now provides support and education for those wanting to raise chickens, and have fresh eggs. You can apply for a grant and they will bring you a coop, free chickens, and teach you how to raise them!
Raising chickens is taking off in the South Bronx, as are alot of green initiatives, but this program is available everywhere. For more information about raising chickens in NYC, or to apply for a grant, join a group, etc, click below:

It is actually pretty cool!

Hmmm...I wonder if that explains the chickens or roosters my neice has been seeing in Howard Beach...

If you raise them in small apartments, won't they smell?

This house on Franklin Ave in BK has a chicken coop in their front yard. I pass it all the time on my way to and from the subway...I've always wondered about the whole chicken thing in NYC. If you Google "lost chicken in Brooklyn" you'll see links pop up with people posting that they've either lost a chicken or found someone's chicken wandering around on the street LOL!

I don't really understand why this is advantageous. Is it to save fuel on transporting the eggs? I support most green initiatives, but I'd prefer not to live next door to a chicken coop. I'm all for growing our own vegetables though. Vegetables tend to be pretty quiet (and they don't poop).

IN the apartment?? I assumed you need at least a small amount of outdoor space to do this?

I'm sure they're supposed to be outside.

We have a pretty big balcony. I wonder if that would work out for the chickens. However they might get offended if we cook some during a BBQ in the summer....
But seriously...anyone want to take bets on who the first ones to act on this is??

The link did not work for me.
Urban farming sounds great in theory and probably has the potential to work well, but I hope city ordinances limit the number of live animals permitted in or adjacent to small, residential spaces and require that their quarters be kept clean. And I hope people don't decide to keep roosters on their balconies!

Really makes you wonder why we didn't just domesticate pigeons...
