I have never used a broker before, and I think this is okay, but want to be sure...

We plan to come out to NYC around the first week of May to apartment hunt. We'd like to have a few brokers show us apartments, then select which one we like the best before we leave/do the paperwork, etc.

As long as we don't sign anything with a specific broker, it's okay, right? I would just like Broker A to have a day to show us what they have, then repeat the next day with a Broker B. Make sense?

I have read about the pitfall that if Broker A shows us an apartment, and Broker B shows us the same one (or even in the same building?), they both can claim their fee - I will keep track of who shows us what so we don't encounter this.

Anything else we should know?

Just as you suspected--as long as you don't sign anything committing you to a single broker, you can use as many as you want. (Or, for that matter, as many as you can stand!)

Thank you for your help! I thankfully have found 2 that have great reviews on another board I frequent...so hopefully they will do the same for me.

Yes, but a lot of brokers will ask or require you to sign a statement ahead of time stating they have rights to charge you a fee if you lease an apartment in any building they showed you.

Good to know its not specific to unit, but within the whole building....which I don't really understand, but whatev.

Thank you!

Should I be upfront with each broker and tell them they are not the only broker I am planning on seeing? Or should we just keep that to ourselves?
