Some crosswalks in Manhattan are actually really dangerous. There are a few where the drivers will speed up and honk like crazy and try to run down pedestrians who HAVE A WALK LIGHT. The one I am thinking of is on 41st and Dyer. I'm sure there are others.

Please remember to stay on-topic, and answer the OP's question. Some people are not as familiar with the complexities of an urban environment such as New York, hence the questions regarding safety. This is not a thread for discussions of specific crimes, either, as there is a specific thread for that. Thank you.

If you staying in the Lower East, why would you visit East Harlem or Inwood?
Overall, you will not be a victim of crime. And if you are, chances are you were involved in illegal activity which exposed you to danger. Just be aware of your environment like you would anywhere in NYC, and in ANY major city in the world.

Whatever. Where have you been the last decade?
Harlem has gone under a major turn around, and will continue to do so.

Yesterday I almost got jumped on Amsterdam ave, so don't give me that safe crap.

It's like this:

Bronx hoods = Manhattan hoods=Brooklyn hoods=Queens hoods=Staten Island hoods

Why?

Um well because it's the same people...covered by the same police force...same poverty (due to cost of living) ....

But alot of you people believe once you step foot into the beautiful island of Manhattan....no wrong can happen...you are now in Utopia....enjoy fellas n dames
