I have been subleasing an apartment for a few months. When I subleased it, I was completely unaware that they were supposed to expressly obtain management approval. They did not do that to save the associated fee, so I have been here without management/landlord knowledge. I did sign a "standard NY sublease" printed off the internet with by subleasor.

I do not want to pay last month's rent, and instead use the security deposit. I will give them a smaller security deposit to hold for the few days I will be here during my last month. I feel that they can easily just walk off with my security deposit, and there would be no legal recourse for me to get it back, since this entire sublease was done off the record. Does the "internet sublease" hold any help for me, if they were not not return the security deposit and I need to pursue legal action? Does the "internet sublease" hold any help for them, if they wanted to pursue action against me/evict me for not paying the last month's rent?
