I'm a London (England) girl moving to New York, and would appreciate some advice from any new yorkers. what are the best areas to live / places to hang out? i'm moving on my own so it's a bit scary but i'm used to city life!
I have heard it is a very expensive place to live from other threads - but is this just the same as London?

New York is huge and very expensive. Do you have a job lined up? Your income will determine where you can live. Were you looking to live in Manhattan? Brooklyn? Staten Island? Queens? or Long Island? There are very nice areas to live in and not so nice. Living here all of my life I have sampled both. I have realized that it all depends on how much you are willing to pay in rent.

I live in Brooklyn and have always worked in the Manhattan. I love going to Broadway shows and all the fantastic restaurants. Manhattan has all the night life you could ever want and then some. The best thing about NY is that no matter what you are looking for you are just a train ride away. We are looking to move to Florida and it is making me sick because I love NY but my husband says he wants a change. So we will see. If I don't like it I will come right back with or without him. LOL.

You will find many Brits in NYC/the NY area. Even though you are from a big city, there will be culture shock. My husband is British and he had a hard time getting used to things we Yanks do, but in the end he likes living here better than England. (I liked living in England very much).

You may find Queens/Brooklyn cheaper than NYC.

Hi,
London is similar in size to NYC, but very different. It is another country you know.
If you like London, you will probably like New York. Affordability is always the issue here. I lived in Manhattan 7 years but recently moved to Park Slope Brooklyn, and really love it.
I would check out craigslist.com to get a feel for the housing costs in different parts of the city. Its how we found our apartment.
Good luck and feel free to send me a PM. My wife and I are huge fans of London and hope to go back for another visit soon.

I like the South Street Seaport area to visit in NY. There are a lot of cool shops and it's historical.

If you have specific questions, I think we can help you more. I am not an expert on NYC, but I know about living in the UK, so maybe I can help you with coping with the differences in culture.

Thanks for all the replies!
New York sounds amazing - as do all the ppl! I need to get a company to sponsor my visa to get a work permit and i'm not even getting past the application stages. I'm trying but the NY dream is harder than thought.
On the housing I checked out craigslist and roommatch. Manhatten seems cool but expensive and Brooklyn a little further away but just as cool and a bit cheaper!
Thanks for the responses, hope to get there soon!
