Hey everyone, my dream has been to be a Police officer for a very long time now. It's my dream job, I love it. I really do. Anyways, I've become addicted to NYC the past 3 years, ever since I first went. I went yesterday and was actually in Times Square for the Bomb Scare, so I know exactly what I'm getting into. Anyhow, I'm a Junior in High School, and next year I plan from moving to NYC from Philadelphia to get started and begin my new life there. I've gone to NYC 4 times, twice the past 2 weeks, And twice in 2008. Anyhow, the city gives me a rush, I love it and I literally feel like I belong there. And I know I do. It's my place; I love it.
What I'm asking is.. if I want to do this next year, what should I do? Which area should I move to? The Bronx? Brooklyn? I doubt I'd be able to afford Queens. I plan on getting a job and going to college while there. I would just like some guidance and suggestions.
And I definitely know that this is the same post over again, but some idiot ruined the other one by claiming I was a fake poster and it kept going on from there. It was annoying. Also, I plan to attend the College of Staten Island next year and taking Crim Justice there.
If you guys could guide me in the right path, then my dream is definitely possible, and I'll be unbelievably, extremely happy.
Please help. thanks!!

Why don't you leave the kid alone? If any of us want to respond to him, it's our own time we're wasting. Stop dogging him.
Listen son, whatever the case is, you are at the age where you are applying for colleges. I am assuming that your GPA is good enough to get you into the schools you want. How does the college in Staten Island compare to other schools who specialize in criminal justice studies? Are any close to your home in PA? What are the costs associated with each of them (i.e. tution, do you qualify for aid, housing costs, books, living expenses)? Are your parents willing or able to help you with any of the costs?
You don't need to go to the College of Staten Island to qualify to become a member of the NYPD. What is your rush to get here? You are still very young (as you are now, so once was I!!), so please make sure you sit down with your parents and HS guidance counselor. One way or the other, you are still 4 years away from qualifying to be a cadet.
If you are still set on the College of Staten Island, and you have the agreement with your parents and counselor, then the last place you want to live is the Bronx if you are going to school full time (??) on SI. You would be better looking for housing in Brooklyn or Staten Island. The Bronx is WAY too far North to do a daily commute and Queens is too far East.
Best of luck to you whatever you decide - but PLEASE - talk all your options over with adults who care about you. NY will always be here. We can wait 4 years till you get here. I promise!

Thankyou SO much. I REALLY appreciate this. Yeah, my parents told me that they want me to pursue their dream, and they might also move out there after I get settled. I've told everyone about my plans, and I'm definitely set on CSI. It's a great campus, and I'm very excited already. Right now I'm just unsure where I should live. I was thinking Brooklyn, and getting a job there as well.. what do you recommend I do? Thanks alot, this is greatly appreciated.

The same work that is available in Brooklyn will be available to you in Staten Island. It's a pretty big borough! You ARE talking about part-time work though, right? Remember, the economy is pretty hard hit everywhere. Bklyn and SI are no exceptions.

Of course, I definitely understand that. I know. I'm actually learning all about Staten Island and Brooklyn right now, and I'll visit CSI this summer, or maybe next week, to check it out. And of course part-time. I guess the best thing I should do is to visit next week(I go every week anyway), and just check it out, learn a bit more, visit the campus, check out their application, check out SI as well, and next year just see if I can get a job there or not. I'm very excited right now even thinking about this to think my dream is reality.

Still, PLEASE, talk to your guidance counselor at school. Make sure you also speak to a financial aid specialist. You have over a year to make your final choice. Investigate and apply to other schools offering the same program and see which offers the best terms. You are too young to get locked into one decision now. That is the beauty of being your age - you have the ability to change and re-change your mind frequently with almost no consequences. And I am NOT talking down to you whatsoever, but choosing a college is big boy time. In the same way you would not choose a wife by seeing one girl without talking to her or getting to know her. Do NOT limit your options regarding college choices based on a desire you have at this moment in time.

Right. You're giving me amazing advice. Thankyou so much. As of now, after all of my researching, my very best bet is next year, to find a roomate there via craigslist as well as finding a part time job on Craigslist that pays enough for me to live there. I think I'm pretty much good and set in stone as to being able to live there now. I'm glad I'm intelligent enough as to be able to devise a perfect plan. And of course, I'm not going to do anything yet. Should I feel the same exact way next year, I'll jump on it. I'm going to be research everything as well and make sure I make the very best decision. Thankyou so much for your help.

1. You got the right passion and excitement for this adventure.
2. You are doing your homework.
I wouldn't worry about . . .
Like anything or anyone is going to stop you anyway, lol.

Planning is good. Just remember that there will always be some unforeseen situations, so no plan is perfect. Never allow yourself to get sucked into a debate about what you dream of doing with your life. Some will understand and support you. Some will not. Some cannot. Always go with the winners, the people who can help you make it happen. Don't ignore constructive criticism, do ignore bullying and, always but always, "To thine own self be true."
