I got a perfect ride in the early AM from 14th st to Hudson and Leonard...

Asking the cabbie is good manners - remember: you want the cab to take you to your destination. Manipulate them into thinking you're asking for something rather than ordering them to take you somewhere. It makes life easier.

I get in the cab and give them my address after they have started the meter.
I have yet to be turned down or thrown out of a cab after telling them I want to go to Astoria, Queens

Sure you can ask....AFTER you have gotten in the vehicle.

I'm not rude to cabbies, but I certainly wouldn't care if I was considering how much excessive noise pollution they cause the city with their incessant honking.
