Hi guys,

I'm moving next month to NYC from London and just wanted to query what the tipping is like here. In London, we only tip in restaurants (10-15%) but on my previous visits to the US (in particular Las Vegas) I literally had to tip everybody....

What is the tipping etiquette for taxi's and restaurants? Also, if I'm in starbucks or buying food from a vendor, would I have to leave a tip for them as well?

Thanks,

Restaurants: 15% or simply double the tax
Taxis: similar I suppose but a tendency to "round it up" to the next dollar.
Starbucks I don't because I only get a "regular" coffee there, none of the fruity sweet stuff that enrages the person standing in line behind you.
A street vendor? Never.

Um...restaurants should be 20%. Especially if the server was good. Servers ONLY work off tips, so tipping low means we arent paying our bills. Can you tell what I do? Taxis I would assume the same, but usually I just throw in a couple of extra dollars, definitely round up. for instance, 10.45 would go to 11, and then you tip on 11. Starbucks I dnt usually tip, unless I get change, then I may throw it in

Tip only when somebody does something beyond what his duty is (for which he is already paid) and only if you requested and/or needed that. The amount of tip is based on your understanding of merit, not on somebody's recommendation. Unfortunately, for many people tips became just another form of tax.
There is only one requirement: don't tip government employees (especially cops), everything else is up to you.

Yes those tips are referred to as "bribes."

I tip at restaurants...the bellman...cab driver...hair stylist...and anyone who goes beyond and above. If you are average I tip 18%...great 20%. I try not to go below 18 but if you are rude then 10%

Isn't 18% too high.. I think most people go by like 15%. Either way, you don't really need to know these numbers.. there's just a certain amount that people typically tip for certain things, and you just leave it like that. Like at the barber shop, $2 is an acceptable amount.. a lot of people like to double the tax line for restaurants, etc.

I never even thought about tipping a cabbie. But now knowing that some do I still wont. I usually just double the tax unless this person really wows me. IF the server is bad then they get less. I could go into the restaurant tipping thing more but thats another thread.
