I used to LOVE handball when I was in high school. It's such a great sport... Not to mention low maintanence. I don't think there is a better exercise either... play for half an hour and you'll be dripping. I find it kind of sad now that I don't play anymore since it used to be a large part of my life.
I agree about the drug dealer thing though. Not sure if it's still like that, but I remember people doing drugs right on the courts. I was also harassed by a gang at my park while playing once. The game seems to attract hoodlums and low lives, sadly. You have to pick the right place to play
I remember some years back, when I waited with a friend in the time-honored fashion to claim a spot on a court here in Brooklyn. When we got our chance, my friend (who had no left-handed shot whatsoever) insisted on playing the "strong side." Needless to say, once our opponents discovered that fact, every shot they took went to his side of the court...and we were gone in short order. That's life in front of the big cement wall!
When I think about handball, I think about chinese people lol. There was this chinese handball player in stuyvesant high school, he was like the city champ and he used to do rollers with his left cuz he got so bored.
It depends on your culture. Basketball can be popular in some parks but the ones I go to in Queens are all about handball. Go to a place like Pomonok park -the handball courts are packed from 2 to sunset everyday from April to November. The scene and the competition is truly lively and intense. Basketball is usually empty except on super peak days when the weather is great and the park is packed. In fact all the parks i go to have a soft basketball scene. The only handball park that is real live in handball that also has a active basketball scene is west 4th but even then there are more people playing handball than basketball.
Your sporting taste depends on your cultural background. In a general sense immigrant neighborhoods(Oriental/Hispanic/Euro) go for handball, American (black) neighborhoods -they are more influenced by basketball on TV- go for basketball while other Americans (ruling class whites) like to ride $5,000 bikes or jog or lift things up and put them down in some facility with elaborate apparatus.

As others have stated, handball courts tend to attract the hooligans. That's why I always stayed away.

That's def a correct assertion. Brooklyn's heavily bball although a decade ago it was more so.
Big tournament this weekend at Coney Island. It the national one-wall championship. Whoever wins this one is likely best in the world. Stop by the courts the action will be intense and very entertaining.
