To avoid the bedbugs at Circulation Desk, self-check out your books.
As for the homeless, idk what to say.....I stay at the MidManhattan branch very often and do see them reading books. Sometimes we are even on adjacent tables. :P But I haven't encountered a smelly person. Maybe it's because I stay on the 5th floor.

They're items in circulation, constantly being passed from person to person, going in and out of people's homes, and then back into the libraries. You can place books on hold for pick-up at any branch. That's what I do. I pick up all my books at Ottendorfer, but they could be coming from any branch in the NYPL system. Self check-out isn't going to make a bit of difference.
