Well they have done studies and it is near impossible to contract HIV from saliva. It's also very hard to even contract it through oral sex (male to female and male male, I havent read anything about males performing on females) while swallowing...ya know...
I think unless the spit lands in your mouth or an open wound the only issue is the grossness...
Hmmm...couldn't someone contract herpes or a very bad cold (pneumonia, influenza or dare I say it SWINE FLU) through saliva...Im no doctor, but there's gotta be some health risk from getting spat on. Oh and for those of you with strong stomachs...I have heard of cases where some sickos spit blood (cuts on tongue) on their victims, but these were mostly from HIV+ addicts in drug clinics and inmates in prison.

Inorder to contract herpes you must have skin on skin contact. And If spit lands on normal uncut skin it isn't going to hurt you. The whole purpose of having skin it to protect your body from germs. Just like if someone sneezes and touches the subway pole then you touch the pole, nothing is going to happen UNLESS you touch your mouth or nose where the germs can enter your body.

This was on the news over in Oregon. Technically spitting on someone is assault.
Indeed so! And a recent modification to the laws here in New York specifies that anyone who assaults a transit worker is eligible for seven years without probation. Of course, that assumes the assailant has been apprehended. Unfortunately, very few people who have it in mind to spit at a bus driver, hit a conductor with a brick (yes--that has happened!) etc., are going to hang around waiting for the police. And I say that from experience, believe me.
personally I'd like to spit on the MTA (not literally since that's a form of assault) for cutting one of my bus lines in queens.
You'll have to get at the back of the line for that. (And I work for MTA!)
