If Section 8 is closed in NYC how is it that I can find numerous Craigs list ads for apartments here accepting Section 8? Is it fraud? Again, I am looking to return to NYC from ALbany. How is it that these apartments claim to accept Section 8 if there is no more section 8?

This question has not been answered, anyone know???? Enough with the rudeness. I don't understand how some landlords are claiming to accept section 8 if there's a freeze on section 8 in nyc right now...

Soulbarer,I really think you should respond to some of those ads and hop on a bus to NYC with your voucher from Albany and see what happens. It's the only way you are going to find answers to your questions. Why keep torturing us when none of us are handing out section 8 vouchers or renting apartments to people with them ? All you will get here are differing opinions from people who don't really know anyway so what is the point?
The only way you will find your answers is by doing a little leg work on your own behalf.

Ever thing of just calling those adds and seeing what happens. I know that probably is the hardest way, but we all must make sacrifices.

Section 8 gets re opened now and then, but a few months ago they actually closed it off after giving vouchers to people. In other words, they had actual vouchers and they cut them off.

Section 8 is considered the bane of landlords, and it's hard to get on. However, if you're on it in Albany I think you may be able to get on it here. I'd call Section 8, or look in the local papers on line. I know I see ads in the Bronx all the time that say "Programs OK or Section 8 ok." But you won't be living in Manhattan, or in a super fancy hood. The Bronx has a lot of Section 8, but it's also harder to get an apt for a single person. Many Section 8's are reserved for, say, single women with children who had an abusive partner or spouse. But my advice is go online and look in the Daily News and NY Post and I think you'll see some listings--also try the Bronx Times and other local papers. Maybe some other boroughs in dicier hoods would have listings too.

This is why Im asking, it seems to conflict with advertising saying they accept it
  • NYCHA will continue to provide a Section 8 housing subsidy for current tenants who are already in an apartment.
  • Section 8 vouchers that have been assigned to applicants who have not yet secured an apartment have been terminated and will not be honored. Should sufficient Section 8 funding become available, current voucher holders will be given priority to have their vouchers restored.
  • Applicants seeking a Section 8 voucher are advised to apply for Public Housing, and/or call 311 for other housing assistance referrals.
