That used to be more common than it is nowadays. There was, for example, a very distinct Greenpoint accent (you could tell right away; 'er' and 'oi' were transposed). If you happen to remember the famous old sitcom All in the Family--Archie Bunker spoke with a Greenpoint accent. Of course, if you came from that part of Brooklyn, you would've called the neighborhood Greenpernt!
Since Queens is such a melting pot, we have lots of accents. But I grew up here and I don't have an accent at all. When I lived outside of NY people couldn't believe I was from here. They all said I spoke like a mid westerner.
bk and queens are on the same island. various trains go through each borough. how on earth are we going to speak differently from each other? bk, queens, bx, etc. are all a part of the same city. we do not speak differently on average.
if anything transplants are the ones with different accents, but its not because of the borough they live in.
